Joy, Bevan and Eddie Barron.
The WAHCC is celebrating a Midland landmark with a display of historic bikes alongside information and photographs drawn from interviews with Flash employees, riders and members of the Barron family.
Please, be our guest; as part of our Pop Up Museum celebrating the Flash Sports Depot we're inviting all current Flash owners to bring their bikes back home to Midland. Have your Flash dated and added to our register by a club expert and take away a commemorative registration tag.
We’re also inviting ex employees and riders associated with Flash to down tools and join us for morning smoko.
Do you have a cycling story to share? Your first bike, a racing rellie? Record it for posterity in the club’s oral history booth. This may be the biggest gathering of Flash bikes since the company closed in the 2000.
All this is happening alongside the City of Swan's celebration of Midland's 125th anniversary at the Old Courthouse in Midland.
The exhibition will run 9am to 4pm each day.
A leisurely lap or two of the lake. Meet at Bibra Lake Reserve Carpark, Progress Drive, just north of the Gwilliam Road corner.
Club President Robert Frith loves a good flow chart. He’s been taxing his mind on the best way to deal with the preservation of old bikes, and tonight he’ll share his shocking findings and unconsionable opinions. Riots will doubtless ensue.
The talk will focus on two bikes owned and ridden by John McGrath in the ‘50’s and 60’s.
Before bicycles the only way to get around was on foot, or if one was wealthy enough, by horse. The concept of being able to balance on something that falls over when not moving was beyond comprehension.
Founding member Alan Naber has spent some time looking at the social history of cycling. Alan’s presentations are always well researched and presented, check it out at the October meeting.

A rare opportunity to see club members and their amazing old bikes on a weekday! You’ll find us at stall 58.
Once again the club has booked three bays at one of our favourite spring events. Sellers set up from 8am, buyers are welcome from 9am.
This rare child sized Swansea track tandem was for sale at a recent Vincent Swap Meet.
The club is once again supporting the Beverley Heroic by exhibiting in and managing the Retro Bike Show.
See the sparkle and shine of pre 1987 bikes. Spot the oldest bike… single speed, 3 speed, 10 speed, witness the evolution of life on two wheels. Throw in some passionate owners and we have a "Show and Shine" exhibition. Vote for your favourite, or take part; drop your Beverley Heroic steed off at the Town Hall*, pay the paltry entry fee, and be part of the fun.
* not restricted to Beverley Heroic riders!
The paths around Whiteman Park are quiet, smooth and, most importantly, flat! This ride is a great opportunity to bring out something interesting or fragile that will appreciate the nursery slopes. Moustaches optional :-)
Meet at the carpark adjacent to Revolutions Transport Museum.

In 1990 a world record set by Hubert Opperman in France 50 years earlier fell - the new record holder was West Australian Rod Evans. Frank West will bring the restored Milton Jones built Rod Evans 24 Hour bike and talk about its history.
Our August auction includes some special bikes, four Flashes including two road bikes, a track bike and a girl’s bike with 24” wheels.
The girl’s bike is in relatively poor condition, nonetheless with only 16 bikes on the Flash register it is rare.
The race bikes all sport their original paint and have riders’ names on the top tube. It is possible that the track bike is an older frame that was refreshed in the mid 1960’s.
The two road bikes date from the mid to late 60’s with frame numbers just 6 digits apart. It looks as though both bikes were originally fitted with Campagnolo groupsets however one has been updated with some Shimano 600 components.
Along with the bikes we have four vintage jerseys in very good condition, two wool and two synthetic. The synthetic ones are from NSW and Tasmania.
The auction will also feature a collection of cycling related posters, a book and some Chater Lea parts donated by members Alan Naber and Iain Kenny.
As usual this will be a pencil, or silent, auction and you must be a current financial member to bid.
Founding member David Clark passed away recently. This ride from the clubrooms to Point Walter is to celebrate Dave’s life.
You’re invited to join at the Hickey St clubrooms at 10am, or if you’re not riding, at Walters River Café, Point Walter at 11am. We’ll have a cuppa and share some memories and laughs in honour of the departed. With luck we won’t get too wet!
Once again our Annual General Meeting will be spiced up with an auction of donated bikes and other items.

Working from a backyard shed between the Swan River and Indian Ocean brothers Howard and Les Baldwin launched the Swansea Cycles and Motor Co.
Swansea Cycles would go on to be one of Australia’s largest cycle manufacturers, providing basic transport to many but also the means to reach great sporting success for others. We invite you to share their story.
As part of our Pop Up Museum celebrating the Swansea Cycle and Motor Co we're inviting all current Swansea owners to bring their bikes back home to Freo. Have your Swansea dated and added to our register by a club expert and take away a commemorative registration tag.
We’re also inviting ex staff and riders associated with Swansea to down tools and join us for afternoon smoko.
Do you have a cycling story to share? Your first bike, a racing rellie? Record it for posterity in the club’s oral history booth.
Aside from what may be the biggest gathering of Swansea bikes since the company closed in the 1960’s we’re recreating part the of the shop as it might have been in the 1950’s complete with period tools, parts and advertising.
All this is happening in cooee of the original shop and factory on William St in Fremantle.

Long term Belmont resident John McGrath was a successful road and track rider from the 1940’s to the 1960’s. Recently two club members, Malcolm Bell and Robert Frith, have restored a pair of John’s original track bikes, a Bobby Jones built frame which John brought to WA when he moved from Sydney, and a locally made Swansea.
The City of Belmont is hosting an evening celebrating John’s achievements. We’ll discuss the conservation and restoration of the bikes and how the Burra Charter can influence that process.
Parking will be available for this event in the City of Belmont staff carpark (after 5pm only). The staff carpark is accessible via Robinson Avenue off Wright Street.
This is a free event however bookings are required as places are limited - book here.
The first meeting of the WAHCC was on March 6th 1999 - cake is in order!
At the time of his passing Harold Perry had around 120 bikes and frames, as well as a collection of parts. Most of the collection dates from the 1970’s And 80’s although some of it goes back to the 40’s. Harold’s family are keeping a handful of bikes and are kindly offering club members the first look at the rest.
Details are in the club newsletter.

We’re going to wrap 2019 up with a few treats. It’s never too early to think about Christmas right?
The star of this auction is a mid fifties four swan Swansea in very tired but original condition.
There is also an interesting looking large track framed bike refitted as a 10 speed in the ‘80’s. Along with the Shaimano and Diacompe parts it has retained it’s original Ambrosio stem and GB handlebars. The dropouts are stamped SPEED (RHS) and 303 (LHS).
The auction also includes a child’s trike, a 1945 Malvern Star step-through, a 1952 Greyhound, a Cinelli cap and a number of parts. Images of the parts and the Malvern Star to follow.
Club Members will be displaying French bikes from their collections at this year’s Bonjour Perth French Festival. The oldest bike on show will be an 1865 Michaux Velocipede, but you can also expect to see Peugeot and Vitus represented.
